Where Zeus Was Born: A Healing Sanctuary on the Slopes of Mount Lykaion

Introduction

Abeliona Retreat is a boutique wellness sanctuary tucked into the village of Abeliona in the Arcadian highlands of the Peloponnese, Greece. Built on the slopes of Mount Lykaion — the mythological birthplace of Zeus — and just three kilometers from the UNESCO-listed Temple of Apollo Epicurius, the property sits within one of the most spiritually charged landscapes in the ancient Greek world.. Twenty-one rooms — thirteen Junior Suites and eight Family Suites, several with fireplaces — are built in traditional Arcadian stone-and-timber style, blending heritage architecture with contemporary comforts.

Energy-harmonizing tools such as orgonites and tachyon devices are integrated throughout the property, complementing the site’s ambient healing presence. Abeliona is at once a mountain hideaway, an active wellness venue, and a gateway to ancient Greece.

Wellness Options:

Abeliona Retreat offers a wellness experience rooted in the energetic and historic resonance of its location. The property sits atop layers of mythological and archaeological significance, drawing on the natural vortex energy of Mount Lykaion and the nearby Temple of Apollo Epicurius — long associated with healing in antiquity.

A dedicated yurt provides a peaceful, ceremonial space for yoga and meditation; structured yoga and meditation classes are launching in the coming season, complementing the outdoor meditation spaces already woven throughout the grounds. The retreat is also available for plant medicine practices, making it a fitting venue for facilitators leading deeper, intentional healing journeys.

Beyond the formal modalities, healing extends into movement and nature immersion: the retreat sits within the Apollo Trails network, offering more than 90 kilometers of signposted hiking and cycling routes, with E-bikes available on-site. Quiet forest walks, mountain air, and proximity to natural landmarks make this an ideal location for nervous-system regulation, contemplative practice, group retreats, and bespoke wellness programs.

Food

Food at Abeliona Retreat is grounded in farm-to-table philosophy and the rich Arcadian terroir surrounding the property. The retreat operates its own farm, Agno Farm, which supplies the kitchen with house-produced yogurt and cheese — products that capture the freshness and character of mountain pastures.

The remaining pantry is built from traditional raw materials sourced directly from neighboring producers, ensuring meals reflect the authentic agricultural heritage of the Peloponnese: cold-pressed olive oils, wild greens, stone-milled grains, free-range eggs, herbs, and seasonal vegetables. Menus offer meaningful variety and diversity rather than a single rigid program, and the kitchen is well equipped to accommodate specific dietary needs, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free preferences — making it a comfortable destination for retreat groups, plant-based travelers, and guests following structured nutritional protocols.

Meals are designed to feel both nourishing and celebratory: simple, ingredient-forward Greek cooking elevated by the quality of the inputs and the slow rhythm of the mountains.
