Buff Medical Resort, Lake Constance, Germany

On the sunny south shore of Lake Constance, just outside the old town of Konstanz, Buff Medical Resort opened in spring 2025 with a simple but audacious premise: that a “five-star hotel” and “precision medical clinic” under one roof. Initiated by Swiss entrepreneur Hans-Jürg Buff and his family, the resort brings together 142 rooms and suites, a 5,000 m² medical area, and a 40,000 m² wooded estate built almost entirely from sustainable, pollutant-free solid wood and Swiss stone pine.

Under the medical leadership of Dr. Claas Hohmann, the resort’s “four pillars” — movement, nutrition, metabolism and sleep — are treated not as spa vocabulary but as clinical targets, measured with hospital-grade diagnostics and addressed through F.X. Mayr fasting medicine, Ayurveda and telemedicine aftercare. 

Buff Medical Resort’s signature innovation is its simulated high-altitude climate, individually adjustable in every double room and suite to replicate alpine conditions during sleep. Guests are first assessed with an IHT test (Intermittent Hypoxia-Training Test) to determine oxygen tolerance, then given a personalized “altitude profile” intended to boost mitochondrial regeneration, circulation, fat metabolism and immune function overnight, with no physical exertion required.

Diagnostics go far beyond the bedroom: radiation-free cardio-MRI that  can assess the heart’s performance in great detail and help identify and minimise risks of cardiovascular disease at an early stage. The resort offers also advanced brain MRI, this highly precise form of imaging enables a differentiated assessment of individual risks and provides the basis for personalised prevention strategies.

Gut health, described in-house as “the root of health,” is addressed through F.X. Mayr-based fasting medicine and colon hydrotherapy, while orthopedists, sport scientists and osteopaths run gait and movement analysis for muscle health.

The BuffMed programme menu ranges from 3-night Sports and Relax stays to 21-night Advanced and Classic intensives combining fasting, cardiac diagnostics and personalized therapy plans, with Cardio, Apheresis (blood purification) and Aftercare available as add-ons. Dining at Buff Medical Resort runs on two tracks. Guests on a BuffMed programme follow therapeutic fasting according to Dr. F.X. Mayr — included in the room rate, and built around the belief that a healthy intestine is the foundation of all recovery and revitalization. Not every guest who books a BuffMed programme necessarily fasts; fasting is optional.

Ingredients are hand-picked, seasonal and organic, sourced from the Lake Constance region wherever possible, and prepared under nutritional concepts tailored to each guest’s medical diagnosis in collaboration with the resort’s in-house chef.

Every dish created in the kitchen combines culinary refinement with genuine health benefits – a symbiosis of flavour, vitality and enjoyment. Location

Buff Medical Resort sits in Konstanz — a German city with an almost Mediterranean feel, positioned at Lake Constance Four-Country Region, encompassing Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. The resort is a short walk from Constanz’s historic old town, with its winding alleyways, colorful houses and lakeside promenade. 

The setting is deliberately quiet and sheltered, yet international access is easy: Zurich Airport is roughly 50 minutes away, Friedrichshafen and St. Gallen-Altenrhein around an hour, Memmingen and Stuttgart about two hours, with Munich and Frankfurt at three and four hours respectively. Constance train station, just 3 km from the resort, connects directly to Zurich Airport (about an hour) and Zurich Main Station (around 1¼ hours).
