Introduction

Dharma Sangha Retreat Center, nestled in the serene forests of Crestone, Colorado, serves as a refuge for those seeking spiritual growth, healing, and mindfulness. Established by Zen Master Danan Henry Roshi, this center harmoniously blends traditional Zen teachings with holistic wellness practices.

Dharma Sangha’s mission is to offer a tranquil environment where individuals can engage in deep meditation, self-discovery, and personal transformation. The retreat center, also known as Crestone Mountain Zen Center, is dedicated to monastic Zen practice and personal retreats.

It is led by Zentatsu Baker Roshi, who succeeded Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, the founder of the San Francisco Zen Center and Tassajara Zen Monastery. Suzuki Roshi’s teachings, including those in his renowned book “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind,” continue to influence the center’s approach.

Dharma Sangha is both a traditional and contemporary space where guests can explore Zen practice, discover themselves, and achieve personal liberation.

Wellness Options:

Dharma Sangha focuses on inner healing through meditation and mindfulness, offering a variety of wellness options. The center provides regular Zen meditation sessions (Zazen), silent retreats, and daily teachings to guide participants toward emotional and mental clarity.

Guests can choose between personal and group meditation retreats, with durations ranging from a few days to several months. These retreats are designed to foster inner peace, awareness, and spiritual growth. In addition, Dharma Sangha hosts Dharma talks, guided walking meditations, and traditional Zen rituals, all aimed at promoting physical and emotional balance.

Zen practice at Dharma Sangha involves the craft of mind and body through stillness and nonduality, aiming to make Zen teachings practically accessible. The center also offers personal retreats where guests can design their experiences in a focused monastic setting, with various accommodations available.

Events for disciplines complementary to Zen, such as yoga and kirtan, are also organized.

Food

At Dharma Sangha, food is integral to mindful practice, promoting awareness and gratitude. Meals are vegetarian, reflecting the center’s commitment to compassion and sustainability. Prepared with fresh, local ingredients, the meals are simple yet nourishing, supporting both physical well-being and spiritual growth.

Guests can expect wholesome, balanced dishes that align with Buddhist principles of mindfulness and interconnectedness. Communal meals are often shared in silence, encouraging participants to immerse themselves in the present moment and deeply engage with the sensory experience of eating.
