MC YOGI, a creative beacon in the yoga universe, seamlessly weaves ancient spiritual wisdom with modern creativity as a yoga teacher, musician, artist and poet, making him one of the most beloved and influential voices in the yoga world.

But his journey wasn’t always filled with light. Before becoming one of North America’s most renowned yoga teachers and a celebrated musical innovator, MC YOGIs life was marked by struggle. A troubled youth, he was expelled from schools, placed in a group home for at-risk teens, arrested for vandalism, and caught in a cycle of drugs and chaos.

Then, at seventeen, he found yoga—or rather, yoga found him. That first class was a turning point, igniting a deep devotion that would change everything. From traveling to India to study with gurus to immersing himself in the teachings of American yoga masters, MC YOGI embraced the practice with his whole being. Through discipline, creativity, and an unshakable belief in transformation, he reshaped his life and, in turn, has inspired countless others to do the same. When not on tour, MC YOGI teaches at Point Reyes Yoga in Northern California, the studio he and his wife Amanda founded in 2001.

PLACES OF HEALING editor Petra, who´s been following MC YOGI´s work many for years, recently had the opportunity to meet him for an interview.

Petra: A very warm welcome to PLACES OF HEALING ! So I want to start with the Super Bowl, the biggest TV spectacle of the year, that just took place and was again watched by tens of millions of viewers worldwide. Imagine, you would have one minute of free airtime at the Super Bowl: How would you use it? What would you tell this massive audience?

MC YOGI: Wow! What an amazing question! I would invite everybody, first and foremost, to just take a big exhale, relax and enjoy the show.

Petra: Maybe it could even turn into breathwork practice…

MC YOGI: Yeah, absolutely! Imagine everybody meditating, that huge crowd. Just being still and feeling the connection that’s always here. I think there would be so much natural bliss, joy and ecstasy overflowing from the Super Bowl.

Petra: Absolutely amazing. I´m keeping my fingers crossed, that you´ll be doing the halftime show at the Super Bowl one day….

In your work as a yogi, musician, graffiti artist and teacher of yoga philosophy, it feels like you’re blending all your skills very effortlessly into this really unique, inspiring and uplifting experience. Where do you get your constant and daily inspiration from?

MC YOGI: So I’m not doing it. That’s why it’s so easy.

Petra: It’s flowing through you?

MC YOGI: Yeah, it’s just life, it’s spirit. We could use the word God. God is doing everything. So that helps me to relax. Because in the earlier days, when I was a young artist, I had to exert a lot of effort, and I felt like I was doing it. There was a lot of pressure and anxiety feeling like: Am I doing it good enough? Am I doing it right? It kind of comes from the head. And then, as you get older, as you ripen and get more mature in the practice, you start to softly land in the heart, and the head starts to become less influential.

The mind can be a beautiful editor, a beautiful assistant and friend but it should never be the leader. The mind should be below the soul, and above the soul is the spirit, and when there’s that natural order, then the mind becomes a beautiful, clear filter, so that everything can flow through from the source. And really the heart is the compass and the sensor. So when things are in alignment with the heart, there’s a natural feeling of ease, and things just flow and happen. This is what we call grace.

The whole aim and purpose of Yoga is to relax into a constant state of grace, which is our nature. Because everything in nature is just happening.  It doesn’t take a lot of effort for nature to create all this miraculous beauty and wonder in the same way that we don’t have to work hard for our heart to beat, to blink our eyes.

So the art and the music, the photography, the film, the writing, all the creative activity, it just flows from that same place that really shines in the stars. The same energy that makes the world turn. It’s just one power, it’s just one energy. So it does everything for you, when you relax and and surrender to it.

Petra: It´s so beautiful the way you described it. It seems like surrendering is the hardest thing for Human Beings to do.

MC YOGI: The easiest thing is always the hardest.

Petra: What you just described when you talked about your early years as an artist, making big efforts, always thinking you’re not good enough and comparing yourself, this is, I guess, how the vast majority of us humans live on this planet. And we’re all trying to find that place of inner peace. So, what would you say is a way to begin, what’s the first step in that direction?

MC YOGI: Make a lot of mistakes, don’t be afraid to fail, try and experiment. And use your heart as your guide to see if something feels good in your spirit. If you feel like there’s love there, if you feel comfortable and relaxed there, if it challenges you in a good way, if it brings out your good qualities, these are all telltale signs that you’re growing and moving in the right direction. It’s very mysterious and mystical. It’s very intuitive. It’s not logical or rational. It can’t be intellectualized.

So when you start on this path of spiritual awakening, enlightenment, awareness, you can start to see that the destination is always the present moment. And that the light shining through our eyes, the light of awareness and attention, is already perfect and complete. So the finish line is behind the mind.

The more we meditate, the more we sit and be still…but you know we can wear the costume and clothing of spirituality, and really not get it. We can say all the right words, hang out with all the trendy, spiritual people, do all the psychedelics, go on all the retreats and trainings. But if the heart isn’t there, then you’re missing the point of all of it. Because it’s all about the heart, like really relaxing and being in a place of presence where we can feel and sense that the spirit that’s pulsing everybody’s heart, the spirit that´s shining in the sun, that´s in the soul of everyone we love, that that energy takes no effort, and it takes no work to be in that presence, because that presence is omnipresent.

So, just by relaxing and resting into it, we get comfortable and used to being in the presence until it becomes established, and we no longer have to struggle with our identities and our addictions.

We can come out of all that illusion, fear, tension, brain struggle. But we have to suffer a lot, you know. Like me, I’m really stubborn. So I have to suffer a lot. And then I let go.

Petra: The suffering is kind of the starting point of a healing journey, because if you’re not suffering, you’re in your comfort zone, there is no need for change…

MC YOGI: Right.

Petra: Many people nowadays have the feeling that our world has become more complex and more complicated and it seems even harder to come to a state of inner peace and bliss…

MC YOGI: Well, I’m a little rebellious in nature and a little counter cultural. So for me, I just respectfully disagree that life is becoming more complex, because people have been taking psychedelic medicine for thousands of years, and if you had a psychedelic journey, you’ll see how complex nature is and how complex reality is.

So yes, we have technology, we have social media and the news and all kinds of stuff that we’re getting bombarded by. But that’s because we’re choosing to do those. Those are all personal choices. Because, if you’re more interested in awareness or spirit, it doesn’t matter what’s coming at you. It’s all just spirit. When I was a little more green, a little less connected because I had all the programming, the conditioning, you know the poison, I think I was more susceptible to external influences, and I took refuge and shelter under the loving protection of my Guru. So everything that I’ve experienced is through his grace, not through me.

My Guru’s name is Neem Karoli Baba, or Maharaji, he is the Guru of Ram Dass and Krishna Das. He’s a great Baba from India who was an awakened, enlightened soul, who was just all loving all the time, had no big head trip, no ego trip, didn’t ask people to do anything. His basic teaching was: Feed people, love everyone and tell the truth.

And that was basically the essence of his communication, the stream of his energy. So once I took shelter and refuge under him, all the influences that were many, became one. It was just, this is my mentor, this is my guide, my spiritual teacher, so there’s no influence in this world that is not him. That is called Grace. So now I can relax.

Because once we fully surrender to a higher power, and it doesn’t have to be a Guru, it could be spirit. It can be whatever tradition you resonate with, there’s a path for everybody. The more we relax and let go and surrender, everything flows, and everything happens in a very beautiful and natural way. And it generally doesn’t make sense.

Petra: Yes, these experiences often don´t make sense and just feel absolutely right. The element of water plays a big role in your teachings and music. Can you elaborate on this?

MC YOGI: So water is life. Water flows, water moves, water purifies, water cleanses. I’m going to India next week to take a group of people to the Ganga, so we can go bathe in the river. And when you enter the stream, the current, it has a way of washing through your entire body. It’s like the body becomes porous. And it flows through the heart, and it cleans all the filters in the mind.

So whenever we get a little dry, and by dry I mean intellectual, when we get in our thoughts…thoughts cast shadows, thoughts take up space, thoughts have substance, they’re actually objects in our mind.

And sometimes those thoughts can cover like a veil or a mask, so that we can’t see clearly. And then all that emotion and spiritual energy inside of us gets trapped. And what happens is the heart starts to close like a fist because the mind is covering it.

And when the mind gets really thick and heavy, it’s almost like being possessed. We’re not ourselves. We become like robots.

We become more analytical and critical and cynical and judgmental. And we become more divided because the mind out of alignment with the heart will multiply, split, and divide everything into groups, subgroups, subcategories. And then, if we’re divorced from our source, then all those groups will start to war with each other.

So through vigorous practice, which is the steady commitment to relax, surrender, and be still for long periods of time… maybe it’s a little bit every day, maybe it’s chanting, or visualization, breath work, mantra, any type of spiritual practice to kind of melt the mind, let the heart bloom…then the mind becomes your ally or your friend.

Once the mind is brought back into alignment with the heart, there’s no greater friend you can have on earth. It’s the best friend that you could ever dream of. Because the mind is amazing. It’s miraculous. But the mind, disconnected from spirit is a demon. So if we were to simplify it:  The cause of your misery is you. And the solution, the remedy is the one who made you.

Petra: Who lives within us.

MC YOGI: Yes, the still one quiet one, the loving one, the peaceful one, the healing, forgiving, radiant, generous, abundant, effulgent, glowing, permanent, complete, perfect, excellent, amazing one. That is the true you that is the one shining in everyone.

Petra: So let’s make our minds our friends.

MC YOGI: Yes, beautiful.

Petra: Besides the element of water, the Breath is also an integral part of your teachings and music.

MC YOGI: Yes, thank you for bringing me back to water. So water can be the tears that shower the heart so the heart doesn’t get dry and crack. Water can be the flow of your words. Water is considered a living goddess. So when we go into the river we’re not lost in the dry, disconnected mind. We get humbled again, and the water washes over us, and we get purified and cleaned. I have a beautiful song called „Like water for my soul“ and it goes like: Wash away the dust, clean the mind. Rinse my heart until it shines, fill my cup, empty my bowl, cleanse my heart so that it can overflow. Washing over me like a wave as it rolls… So water helps to soften and loosen, so that those emotions can flow out, because all sickness comes from all that emotion being trapped.

And if we’re not expressing it in a healthy, consistent way, we get sick, we get sleepy, we get headaches, we feel attacked.

So the practice is to open up the heart and let the river flow and be in a constant prayer. Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita, that the key to success in Yoga is to turn your life into a never ending, unbroken, seamless, ceaseless, perpetual prayer. And that’s the breath, the breath is water. The breath is water for the soul.

Petra: And the breath is always with us…the first thing we do when we enter this planet is, take a deep inhale. And then we exhale at the very end of our lives…

MC YOGI: In every single class, at least one person farts too. (laughs)

Petra: There are many ways to exhale right? … Can you talk about your daily practice, what does your self practice look like?

MC YOGI: I got a song called „Breathe deep“ and it goes: Breathe in, let it seep in through my skin, absorbed in the force as it begins to spin my mind, move it back toward the one, 360 degree revolution, breathe deep, deep breath, inhale, exhale to release the stress…

So the breath is always happening. And when awareness touches breath, breath becomes spirit, becomes awake, becomes bright, becomes like living inspiration.

So the daily practice for me is, I do my my meditation, I sit. I do my postures. I don’t practice long periods like I used to in the early days when I was doing Ashtanga Yoga at Mysore, you know we practiced for like 2 hours and did very vigorous postures. When I was young I really needed that, because it was really the you know, like a carrot or a stick.

I was a juvenile delinquent. I was getting arrested and kicked out of schools. I was like a straight F student. And I just was very checked out, doing drugs, drinking, getting arrested for graffiti and running around with drug dealers, having weapons, guns, knives and stuff. And so I needed that strong stick when I was a teenager.

Petra: The discipline.

MC YOGI: Yeah, I needed the discipline and the structure. So when I was young, I started practicing when I was 17, and my first Yoga came from my father, and his first teaching was: Listen to your breath. And that has stayed with me for all these years and continues to serve me. And as I’ve gotten older my practic has matured, so it’s become geared more toward meditation. But the postures are always there for the maintenance. But the main practice now is just Bhakti Yoga. Bhakti Yoga to my guru, to my community. And my personal practice. I have a nice little altar, light candles, say prayers for everybody. It just makes my heart really bright, and I feel really happy, and I feel like all my Yoga has led me to a place where I could see that real medicine and magic is the river of love flowing through the heart.

Petra: Beautiful. It’s like listening to prayer when I listen to you. So you just talked about your very first Yoga class with your dad. What was the one thing that made you come back the second time?

MC YOGI: Oh, my God! The first Shavasana was like…it’s like if you took all the drugs and all the sex, and all the alcohol and all the art and all the music, and all the bliss and all the energy. It’s like God poured it into that first Shavasana. I never felt peace and relief like that in my life. Before I was under so much pressure. I had depression and anxiety. I thought thoughts were real. I thought what I was thinking was the truth. I was lost in my head. I was disconnected from my body. I wasn’t feeling my emotions. I was just a wreck. And so, after that first primary series with my dad I felt my whole mind melt back into my body like a deep ocean, like a reservoir, and I was just in this pool of light. Like a star filled sea, and just like a diamond space, and I was so satisfied and so relaxed, it was like the best drug I’ve ever ever tried.

And after that very first Shavasana I was hooked for the rest of my life. I devoted everything to it. I shaved my hair, became celibate, lived like a monk, reading, studying with different teachers, going on pilgrimage. Like my whole life became dedicated to that feeling of being connected. (Sighs) Ahh, it’s just a beautiful feeling. So the short answer to your question: it was that first Shavasana.

Petra: Of all your songs, which ones would you say are the most personal or mean the most to you?

MC YOGI: My music is my therapy. So I make music really for myself, because it really helps me to channel and direct my concentration. So I do little word games and puzzles in my mind all the time. Using my mind is my musical instrument, my mind in tune with the heart. I structure words, I write a lot of poems. For me poetry is prayer. Music is medicine. I think I’ve done like 5 or 6 albums and I got two more that I’m working on right now – I got a movie that I’m working on with my friend…so all these creative projects like writing the book, it’s really just a way for me to understand myself better. And oftentimes in the creative process, the finished product is less important than the process itself, because the finished product is very rarely ever how you imagined it was going to be. It always turns out different, sometimes better, sometimes worse.

But the more that you practice – you know I have a song „Practice makes progress, let go of the outcome, stay focused on the process“ – it’s just being in that creative process. And then that’s how we learn about ourselves. That’s how we develop skills and abilities. And we become better listeners. And we learn that it’s okay to make mistakes and how to be honest with ourselves, honest with each other, how to communicate better. Especially when you’re collaborating with other musicians and producers. It’s like a dance, finding that happy balance where everybody’s able to be fully expressed.

Sometimes it’s uncomfortable because you have to be vulnerable. You have to get into arguments and disagreements. It’s all about moving in the same direction, it becomes a beautiful synergy, where you, as a team or as a partnership, you know you can have those tensions, but you’re still moving in the same direction, and it leads to something amazing. It’s magic.

Petra: The magic of the creative process.

MC YOGI: Yeah. And that could be a relationship, that could be a friendship. Because everything is a creative process. Everything in creation is a creative process.

Petra: You mentioned a film that you’re working on? Can you give any more details?

MC YOGI: It’s in the early stages. It’s really right now a creative project. A friend and I have been working together for the past 15 years, where we’ve been filming across India, across America, and the whole the thread of the project, is talking to people about the power of sound. About how music plays a real pivotal role. Music and sound is the closest to spirit, because it’s subtle, and it’s close to silence. So sound is a very powerful tool to draw us into spirit, whether it’s listening to the breath, listening to mantras, listening to music, listening to the wind, the ocean, the waves. Our ears have this shape of a seashell and when you press a seashell you hear the roar of the ocean. When you listen to the breath you can hear the roar of the universe. So anytime that we tune in and listen, we’re becoming more open, more receptive, more expansive.

When we think we know the answer, the mind compresses and contracts, and it can become very closed-minded. We can become rigid and dogmatic. So listening is like being a good student. It’s broadening and brightening the mind to receive new information that can be useful and helpful.

Petra: And in order to be a good listener, you need to be in the present moment, because if you’re in your head all the time, you’re not here, and you’re not really listening.

MC YOGI: Exactly, well said.

Petra: So let´s talk about your upcoming projects. Obviously, you’re going to India now. And then you´re doing your Super Sonic Yoga concerts, that just look like so much fun and joy!

MC YOGI: Yes my friend Dj Taz Rasheed, who’s an amazing musician and producer, he’s got these super lightweight headphones. And we have these beautiful experiences where I teach Yoga and we do live music. I told Taz the other day, it’s my absolute favorite way to perform music, because I don’t have to push and I can hear myself. I’ve had people come up to me who said they’re partially deaf, and it helped them. And people said that they have ADHD and it helped them to focus. So there’s something about like just having the headset where you could really like be in your own world, feel connected to community, and everyone who’s sharing the experience with you. So it’s one of the most powerful experiences that I’ve had teaching with the headphones.

Petra: Well, hopefully you´ll bring the Super Sonic Yoga events to other parts of the world in the future.

MC YOGI: We would absolutely love to! We´ll be doing a bunch of the Supersonic Yoga events in Florida. Florida is amazing, the energy in Florida is just so beautiful like the weather and the people are really laid back.

Petra: So coming back to your projects, I saw that you’re launching an app.

MC YOGI: Yes, I’m very excited about the app, because it’s going to be one place where you can access a lot of guided meditations, my music, Yoga and conversations. So I’m getting ready to launch it in, probably the next month. It´s called the „Mc Yogi Yoga and Meditation App“ and the vision is to also have live classes. It’s always been my dream to be able to have one platform to house all videos, all my songs, all my albums, my poetry. It’s very exciting.

Petra: It does sound very exciting. So thank you very much!

MC YOGI: And the only thing I want to share before we finish is back to your very first question. If I had a couple of minutes at the Super Bowl, and I could communicate to everybody. Then I would encourage and invite everybody to just take a few minutes every day, just to breathe, relax, melt, let go, empty or dump spill. Give everything back so that you’re not carrying anything. There’s nothing over you.

I think there’s a beautiful way through Yoga and meditation that we can really lighten our load and make our life easier and better and brighter by not taking ourselves so seriously, by not putting stuff onto other people, judgments, expectations, worries, concerns. And just tending to our own heart, and I think the more we do that, the more we water the heart, the more we let that river flow through us, the more everything has a way of opening up, and then life becomes very miraculous and magical. And everything becomes a blessing, and everything becomes infused with the energy of grace.

Grace means, that which you did not earn. You can’t do anything to get Grace. Grace just comes.

We can do a little bit of work and relaxation to make ourselves ready for it. There’s a great saint in India and he says: „The winds of grace are always blowing, but we have to do the work to open our sail so that it can blow through us.“ So it’s always here. We just need to relax and open up and let it work its magic on us.

Petra: Beautiful, such an important reminder. And another thing I heard you say on stage at Bhakti Fest, that is also important for all of us to remember: „Life is a miracle.“

MC YOGI: Yes, we need to make bumper stickers! And some little buttons. And sticky notes.

Petra: That would indeed be a great way of reminding everyone.

MC YOGI: Well, the best way to remind people is just by being it. And you know, when you are embodying something you don’t have to say it. It is communicated on a much deeper level.

Petra: So thank you for being the embodiment of Bhakti, of creativity, of joy and bringing it all into the world, and actually making these teachings accessible in a language that is easy to understand.

MC YOGI: Well I’m not doing it (laughs).

Petra: Ok, you’re the channel for everything that God wants to bring into this world through you. Thank you so much for taking the time and for your valuable sharings.

MC YOGI: Well, it is a pleasure to talk with you, Petra, and an honor and a blessing to be able to connect and to hang out. Make sure you drink water today!
