The Gasteiner Heilstollen (Gastein Healing Gallery) has been a beacon of hope for those seeking alternative therapies to alleviate physical ailments. For over a century, patients have ventured deep into the mountains to benefit from radon-heat therapy, a natural treatment offering significant relief without the side effects often associated with pharmaceutical drugs. As modern medicine evolves, so too does the popularity of these natural therapies, drawing informed patients looking for holistic ways to manage their health.

The Heilstollen has a rich history of mining dating back to Ancient Roman times (8th century BCE – 7th century CE). The 16th and 17th centuries marked a golden age, with over 800 kilograms of gold extracted in 1557 alone. During WWII, efforts to revive gold mining in the Radhausberg led to the discovery of unexpected health benefits for miners, including relief from rheumatic and lung conditions. This prompted the University of Innsbruck to study the area in 1946, confirming the healing effects of the gallery’s high temperatures, humidity, and radon levels. By 1951, these studies showed that treatments in the Gastein tunnels offered superior therapeutic benefits compared to conventional methods.

Since 1952, thousands of patients have undergone therapy in the Gastein Healing Gallery. The therapy programs have evolved, now offering personalized treatment plans that combine Healing Gallery sessions with physical therapies and training programs. A 2001 study by Maastricht University confirmed the high effectiveness and positive risk-benefit ratio of this therapy.

Let’s Experience the Heilstollen Ourselves

We were very excited about our visit to the Heilstollen in Bad Gastein. We hadn’t done much research beforehand, but as enthusiasts of alternative healing modalities at Placesofhealing.com, we were naturally drawn to this unique place. The Heilstollen is located in a beautiful area close to Bad Gastein, surrounded by majestic mountains and beautiful waterfalls, making the environment very inviting.

Initially, we imagined a rustic, mine-like setup and were amazed to find a state-of-the-art, almost hospital-like facility where professional treatments and safety are prioritized. Our first impression included seeing many people in their robes, waiting for their next train ride into the mountain. People of all ages, mainly from German-speaking countries, come here seeking relief from pain. After a quick check-in, you receive a digital wristband to stay connected with the facility.

We met with a doctor who reviewed our health history and explained the therapy’s effects. Upstairs, we received our rental bathing suits, towels, bathrobes, and locker rooms for privacy. The experience truly begins when you board a train for a 10-minute ride into the mountain’s core. The atmosphere is not like a cute Disney train ride; you see people in severe pain, some being carried on special beds, all dedicated to improving their health.

Inside, the rising temperatures and humidity are palpable. Silence is encouraged, as it is a space for meditation and healing. Men and women are separated into different galleries with comfortable beds for rest. The high humidity and semi-dark space can feel claustrophobic, but the staff is helpful and reassuring. The experience is reminiscent of a sweat lodge but with a focus on quiet rest and healing energy.

Your mind gets challenged with the quietness of the space. There’s a certain discomfort with the heat, but you also feel the power of the mountain, which has a grounding effect. It is a matter of embracing the situation and letting go of mental concepts, and just completely receiving the healing powers at this magical place. You are almost at the core of a mountain, which could also mean you are traveling inwards to your own core to find self-healing, to boost your immune system.

After 20 minutes, a paramedic checks on everyone, ensuring well-being. Finally, the time is up, and we board the train back to the main station. The return journey brings a sense of humbleness and gratitude. The fresh air, sunlight, and sounds of birds symbolize a rebirth, reminding us of the healing power of the mountain and the journey inward to find stillness and strength.

Some patients compare the experience to a mountain birth. You go deep into the mountain’s core, let go of the outside world, receive strength, and come back through a kind of birth canal back to life, carrying symbolically the strength of the mountain within you. An experience that is not only scientifically proven but also has a deep spiritual connection of renewal and rebirth
