During our visit to Terme dei Papi, we quickly discovered why this place is so beloved by locals. An hour north of Rome, this spa is steeped in tradition, and its true gift lies in the healing power of its natural springs.
The Check-In Experience
The check-in process can be a bit complex, especially if you’re not familiar with Italian. You start by selecting a number from a machine to pick your services, which is only in Italian. Fortunately, the friendly staff at Terme dei Papi guide you through the process. The spa has both an older, rustic area and a newer section with modern changing rooms, offering a blend of history and comfort.
A Unique Grotto Experience
We opted for the Hot Grotto, one of the standout features at Terme dei Papi. Before entering, guests are required to undergo a quick medical check where a doctor measures your blood pressure, though you can also sign a waiver. The grotto is located in the basement, and as soon as you enter, you feel the full force of the healing waters.
The natural wet cave reaches temperatures of up to 48°C (118°F), creating an environment similar to a Turkish bath, with high humidity. The cave walls are adorned with formations of magnesium and sulfate minerals, almost resembling coral. The therapeutic steam is rich in sulfur, making it highly beneficial for rheumatism, gout, and respiratory conditions.
After about 10 minutes in the grotto, guests are guided to a quiet resting room, wrapped in blankets to cool down slowly. The experience is both calming and revitalizing, leaving you in a state of deep relaxation.
The Monumental Pool (Peskina)
After the grotto, we headed to the Monumental Pool, an expansive outdoor thermal pool that serves as a social hub for locals and visitors. Families and friends gather to chat and soak in the soothing waters. The pool is divided into two sections—one for swimming and another closer to the hot springs, where you can lie almost flat and let the warm waters envelop you. The thermal waters, known since Roman times, are excellent for joint and bone health, providing a deeply restorative experience.
A Timeless Tradition
Terme dei Papi’s rich history and tradition make it much more than just a spa—it’s a cultural and healing experience. For those wishing to extend their stay, a nearby hotel offers special access to the baths. What the Romans discovered centuries ago still rings true today: the thermal waters of Terme dei Papi are good for the body, bones, and soul.
